A Preliminary Study for the Korean Version of the Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychological Battery

Abstract
Despite the theoleticalimportance andclinical usefulness of the LNNB, it has nevertheless gained little recognition in Korea. The present study was designed and intended (as a preliminary study for the Korean version of LNN B) to examine the capability of the LNNB in determining the presence and lateralization of brain injury. In the present study, 16 brain damaged patients with confirmed neurological diagnosis were compared with 16 hospitalized psychiatric patients and with 16 normal controls. The psychiatric and normal control groups had no evidence of brain injury. The average age of the three groups of subjects was 28.6 years and the average level of education was 11.8 years. There were no significant deviations between controls and neurological patients for age and education.
All subjects were administered the Pathognomonic scale and empirically derived Lateralization scales (for left and righthemispheres) of the LNNB,according to thestand-ard procedures. Significant differences were found between the neurological group and two control groups on all three scales. X2 analysis on 96 items found the normal control group toperform significantly better than brain dam-aged group on 41 items at the. 05 level. How ever, 39 items failed to discriminate at the 0. 10 level. Low discriminant power of these items was mainly due do the low item difficulty level as evidenced by the item analysis.
To examine the capability of the Lateralization scales in discriminating between right hemisphere and left hemisphere damaged patients, 8 patients with left hemisphere damage and 8 patients with right hemisphere damage were compared. Significant differences were found between the two groups of patients on left hemisphere scale but not on right hemisphere scale. Item analysis showed that only 9 items of left hemisphere scale were significant at. 05 level. Thus, the validity of Lateralization scales was questioned. The Battery¢¥s potential utility and the future research problems with the Korean version of the LN NB were also discussed.
